Writer's Challenges

It’s Picture Book Idea Month! PiBoIdMo is a free November writing challenge for picture book writers and illustrators. The object is to jot down one picture book concept daily. By the end of the month you’ll have at least 30 bright & shiny new ideas! You can then refer to these ideas throughout the year to jumpstart your

creativity and write new manuscripts.

Do You Want to Write 12 Picture Books in 12 Months?

In 12 x 12, you’ll get the motivation and accountability you need to get those drafts finished, all with the support of the friendliest writing community on earth. Registration in 12 x 12 is now closed for this year. Sign up to receive information on 2015 registration.

Kidlit Summer School is a four week writer’s workshop that will run from July 21 through August 15. Because we (Kami and Sudipta) both enjoy teaching writing classes, we wanted to find a way to offer craft-based writing advice on a particular topic each summer. Our 2014 course is going to focus on writing great characters.

For 7 days, you will be encouraged to REVISE those picture book manuscripts. There will be blogs and vlogs encouraging you to take out that poopy first (second, third, fifteenth) draft and breathe new life into it. Some days the revisions will flow, other days you will struggle, but overall you will feel SO accomplished.  I hope you will join us!

Organized by Carrie Charley Brown, the ReFoReMo Challenge, or Reading for Research Month Challenge, happens in March.  The challenge was founded to help picture book writers reform writing by reading and researching mentor texts.

Chapter Book Challenge

Ogranized by Rebecca Fyfe, this is a challenge to write one chapter book in one month. Run each year in the month of March, there will be progress updates, inspirational posts, and guest posts by published chapter book authors and agents. There will even be some terrific prizes!
